How much does a prenup cost in the UK?
There is no single answer, because the price depends on the route you take and on how many solicitors are involved. This free tool builds an itemised estimate for each route, including the other party's independent legal advice, the line most couples don't budget for. How this estimate is built
Drafting is one bill, advice is another
Producing the document and advising a person about it are two different jobs, and they are often quoted together as one headline figure. Here they are always split, because only one of them changes when you change route.
Why there are always two firms
A solicitor cannot act for both sides of the same agreement, so if you both want advice you instruct two firms and receive two bills. Independent legal advice is also one of the factors a court weighs under Radmacher v Granatino (2010), which is why our validity checker scores it.
Where the numbers come from
The drafting bands follow prices providers publish themselves, listed under Published prices with a link and the date each was checked. Independent advice is estimated at £550 to £1,750 per person before VAT, and London solicitor time at a quarter above the rest of England & Wales.
What pushes the drafting figure up
A business to value, assets outside England & Wales, pension sharing, or children from a previous relationship each add drafting time, so each adds 15% to the drafting estimate, capped at 60%. None of them changes the cost of advice, and none of them changes our fixed £199.

No row in that column reads Yes, and that is the point: a solicitor cannot advise both of you on the same agreement. Some services package the two advisers together and publish one price for it, which is what the other tab shows.

Prenup cost FAQs
There is no fixed price, because a prenup is normally paid for in two parts. Drafting runs from a template you complete yourself, through published fixed fees of around £899 to £1,250 plus VAT, up to £1,000 to £1,850 plus VAT at a full-service firm. On top of that, independent legal advice is typically £550 to £1,750 per person before VAT, and it is charged per person because one solicitor cannot advise both of you. Our own online prenuptial agreement is a flat £199 for the document, with no legal advice included. The estimator above itemises whichever route you pick.
Because one solicitor cannot advise both of you on the same agreement, there is a conflict of interest. One firm drafts the agreement and advises whoever instructed it; the other of you instructs a separate firm for independent advice, and that is a separate bill. It is the line couples most often leave out of their budget, so the estimator shows it as its own row on every route, including ours. Our validity checker shows how much weight that advice carries.
It is not strictly required. A court can still take account of an agreement where only one of you, or neither of you, took advice. But independent legal advice is one of the clearest signs that you both understood what you were agreeing to, so going without it is a common reason a prenup carries less weight. Our £199 includes VAT, and nothing is added to it at checkout. Solicitors normally quote their fees excluding VAT, so unless a firm says otherwise, add 20% to the figure you are given. The tick box on the estimator switches every other line between including and excluding VAT so you can compare a quote in whichever form you received it.
Broadly the same. A postnuptial agreement is the same kind of document signed after the wedding rather than before it, so drafting and independent legal advice are priced the same way and the two-bill problem is identical. The one difference is timing: there is no wedding date to work back from, so the 28-day guideline does not apply. Our prenup deadline tool covers that timing if you are still marrying.
A fixed fee has the obvious merit of telling you what drafting will cost before you start. What it does not tell you is what sits outside it. Read the scope carefully: most fixed fees cover drafting and advice for one party only, with disclosure review, negotiation and the other party's independent advice either charged on top or not offered at all. That is why the inclusions table above matters at least as much as the numbers.
